MONGOLIA
5 Leading causes of mortality in Mongolia
(rate per 100 000 population, WHO 2004)
Health sector
As reported in WHO Report 2006, Mongolian health sector has enough health workers in quantity to satisfy population needs, however, a misdistribution of health workforce with acute shortages in the rural areas, particularly in trained cancer prevention specialists and poor equipped medical service makes very limited access to have major disease preventation in the country.
Since 1990s, mortality pattern has shown a rapid epidemiological transition. Cardiovascular diseases, cancer and injuries and poisonings have increased, while deaths from communicable and respiratory diseases have declined. The high cost of travel for rural population and especially for poor rural residents serves as a real barrier to their access to basic diagnostic and more advanced health care services.
